How the conversion works

Area units are squares of length units, so their factors are squared too. One meter is about 3.28 feet, but one square meter is about 10.76 square feet:

More detail: South Asian land units
  • Marla: two sizes are in use. The traditional marla is 272.25 ft², the same as a square rod. Lahore district, DHA and many housing schemes use 225 ft². Check your scheme’s bylaws.
  • Kanal: always 20 marlas, so 5,445 ft² or 4,500 ft² depending on the marla.
  • Guntha: 1/40 acre, which is 1,089 ft² or 121 square yards.
  • Cent: 1/100 acre, which is 435.6 ft².
  • Bigha: not included. Its size varies widely between states and districts, so no single conversion is correct.

Area factors are squared. A meter is about 3.28 feet, so a square meter is 3.28 × 3.28, about 10.76 square feet.

It depends where: 272.25 sq ft under the traditional definition, or 225 sq ft in Lahore and many housing schemes. A kanal is always 20 marlas.
