How to use
- Type a number in Value.
- Pick the From and To units, or tap a popular conversion.
- Read the answer. Stone + pounds and pounds + ounces appear under it.
How the conversion works
Every unit has an exact size in kilograms. The converter turns your value into kilograms, then into the unit you want:
result = value × (kg in "from" unit) ÷ (kg in "to" unit)
| Unit | Exact size |
|---|---|
| 1 pound (lb) | 0.45359237 kg |
| 1 ounce (oz) | 1/16 lb = 28.349523125 g |
| 1 stone (st) | 14 lb = 6.35029318 kg |
| 1 short ton (US) | 2,000 lb = 907.18474 kg |
| 1 long ton (UK) | 2,240 lb = 1,016.0469088 kg |
| 1 tonne (metric ton) | 1,000 kg |
The pound has been fixed at exactly 0.45359237 kg since 1959, so only the answer you see is rounded.
Examples
- 70 kg to pounds: 70 ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.32 lb, or 11 st 0.32 lb
- A 3.5 kg newborn: 7.72 lb, or 7 lb 11.46 oz
- 8 oz to grams: 8 × 28.349523125 = 226.8 g

More detail: tons, troy ounces and carats
- Tons: a US “ton” is the 2,000 lb short ton. The UK ton is the 2,240 lb long ton. A tonne is 1,000 kg, about 1.1 short tons.
- Troy ounce: gold and silver are priced per troy ounce, 31.1034768 g. That is about 1.097 ordinary ounces.
- Carat: the metric carat for gemstones is exactly 200 mg. It has nothing to do with the karat for gold purity.
- Mass or weight? Kilograms and pounds measure mass. Everyday speech calls it weight, and that is what scales show.
Checking a body weight? The BMI calculator accepts stone and pounds too.
