How to use
- Type a number in Value.
- Pick the From and To units. US and UK units are labelled separately.
- Read the answer, or open the table to see every common unit at once.
How the conversion works
Every unit has an exact size in liters. The converter turns your value into liters, then into the unit you want:
result = value × (liters in "from" unit) ÷ (liters in "to" unit)
| Unit | Exact size |
|---|---|
| 1 US gallon | 231 in³ = 3.785411784 L |
| 1 imperial (UK) gallon | 4.54609 L |
| 1 US fluid ounce | 1/128 US gal ≈ 29.57 mL |
| 1 UK fluid ounce | 1/160 UK gal ≈ 28.41 mL |
| 1 US cup | 8 US fl oz ≈ 236.59 mL |
| 1 US tablespoon | 3 teaspoons ≈ 14.79 mL |
The UK gallon is about 20% bigger than the US gallon, and the same goes for UK pints and quarts.
Examples
- 2 L bottle to US fluid ounces: 2 ÷ 0.0295735… = 67.63 fl oz
- 500 mL to fluid ounces: 16.91 US fl oz, or 17.6 UK fl oz
- 20 L to gallons: 5.28 US gal, or 4.4 UK gal

More detail: which cup?
- US cup: 8 US fl oz, about 236.6 mL. This is the measuring cup in US recipes.
- Label cup: US Nutrition Facts labels use 240 mL (21 CFR 101.9).
- Metric cup: 250 mL, common in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
- Dry measures: US dry pints and quarts are slightly larger than liquid ones. They are rarely needed, so they aren’t listed.
- Fluid ounce vs ounce: a fluid ounce is volume; an ounce is weight. They only roughly match for water.
