How to use

  1. Type a number up to 999 trillion. Decimals and minus signs are fine.
  2. Choose Words or Cheque (check) amount.
  3. Pick International names (million, billion) or Indian names (lakh, crore), and whether to put “and” after hundred.
  4. Set the letter case, then copy the result.

How the conversion works

  • Numbers from 21 to 99 take a hyphen: twenty-one, ninety-nine.
  • Digits are read in groups of three: thousand, million, billion, trillion. A billion here is a thousand million (1,000,000,000).
  • The Indian system groups the last three digits, then pairs: 1,00,000 is one lakh and 1,00,00,000 is one crore.
  • After the decimal point, each digit is read on its own: 2.75 is “two point seven five”.
  • British English usually says “one hundred and five”. American English often drops the “and”. Both are correct.
Number International Indian
100,000 (1,00,000) one hundred thousand one lakh
1,000,000 (10,00,000) one million ten lakh
10,000,000 (1,00,00,000) ten million one crore
1,000,000,000 one billion one hundred crore
1,000,000,000,000 one trillion one lakh crore

Writing a check

On a US check, write the dollars in words, then “and”, then the cents as a fraction of 100:

Amount Words on the check
$1,234.56 One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100
$250.00 Two hundred fifty and 00/100
$75.50 Seventy-five and 50/100
$1,500.05 One thousand five hundred and 05/100

If the words and the figures disagree, the words generally win under the US Uniform Commercial Code (§ 3-114).

Examples

  • 2026: two thousand twenty-six (US), or two thousand and twenty-six (UK)
  • 1,50,000 in Indian style: one lakh fifty thousand
  • 0.05: zero point zero five
  • −42: minus forty-two
More detail: how the converter handles edge cases
  • Very large numbers stay exact. The digits are processed as text, not as a rounded computer number.
  • Cheque amounts are rounded to the nearest cent, halves up, so 99.995 becomes one hundred and 00/100.
  • Zeros typed after the decimal point are read out: 12.50 is “twelve point five zero”.
  • Commas, spaces and apostrophes between digits are ignored. Use a dot for the decimal point.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a check amount in words?

Write the dollars in words, then “and”, then the cents as a fraction of 100. So $1,234.56 is “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100”.

What if the words and numbers on a check differ?

Under the US Uniform Commercial Code (§ 3-114), words prevail over numbers. That is why the amount in words matters most.

Should I write “one hundred and five” or “one hundred five”?

Both are correct. British English normally includes “and”; American English often leaves it out. Pick the style you need.

How many zeros are in a lakh and a crore?

A lakh is 100,000 (five zeros), written 1,00,000 in India. A crore is 10,000,000 (seven zeros), written 1,00,00,000.

How do you write decimals in words?

Say “point”, then each digit on its own: 3.14 is “three point one four” and 0.05 is “zero point zero five”. Money uses cents instead.
