How to use

  1. Choose what to work out: pace, finish time or distance.
  2. Enter the other two values, or tap a race preset such as Marathon.
  3. See pace per km and per mile, speed, race times at that pace and your splits.

Pace formula

pace = time ÷ distance
time = pace × distance
distance = time ÷ pace
pace per mile = pace per km × 1.609344

A mile is exactly 1.609344 km (NIST). Speed is the reverse of pace: 60 ÷ pace in minutes gives km/h.

Example

A 4-hour marathon (42.195 km):

  • Pace: 14,400 s ÷ 42.195 = 5:41 per km
  • Per mile: 9:09
  • Speed: 10.55 km/h (6.55 mph)

Rounding

Times are rounded to the nearest second, with halves rounded up. A marathon at exactly 5:00 per km takes 3:30:58.5, which shows as 3:30:59. The exact pace, with hundredths of a second, is under “Exact pace”.

Frequently asked questions

What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?

About 5:41 per kilometre or 9:09 per mile. Exactly 4 hours over 42.195 km is 5:41.3 per km, so holding 5:41 brings you home in about 3:59:48.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply your pace per kilometre by 1.609344, the exact number of kilometres in a mile. So 5:00 per km is about 8:03 per mile. Divide by 1.609344 to convert back.

What’s the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is how long one kilometre or mile takes; speed is how far you go in an hour. They are reciprocals: 60 ÷ 12 km/h gives a pace of 5:00 per km.

How long is a marathon and a half marathon?

A marathon is 42.195 km, about 26.22 miles, under World Athletics rules. A half marathon is exactly half that: 21.0975 km, or about 13.11 miles.

How do I work out my finish time from my pace?

Multiply your pace by the distance. At 5:00 per km, a half marathon takes about 1:45:29 and a full marathon about 3:30:59. Pick a race preset and the calculator does it for you.

How far did I run?

Divide your running time by your pace. For example, 30 minutes at 6:00 per km is 5 km. The calculator also shows the distance in miles: 3.11.
