How to convert megabytes to gigabytes
1 MB = 0.001 GB
SI prefixes are powers of 10, so 1 GB = 1,000 MB exactly: divide MB by 1,000 (SI Brochure). Binary units differ: 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB exactly (IEC prefixes, NIST).
Examples
- 700 MB = 0.7 GB: a video file listed in megabytes
- 250 MB = 0.25 GB: a mobile data top-up
- 1,024 MB = 1.024 GB: a memory size counted in binary-style megabytes

Common mistakes
- MB (megabyte) and Mb or Mbit (megabit) differ by a factor of 8, because one byte is 8 bits.
- Software that divides by 1,024 but prints "GB" is really showing GiB, so its number is about 7% lower than the decimal GB figure.
